Brief description of my career journey:
As much as many may not take it seriously, I frankly think my journey in media started way back in high school when I was part of the school’s yearbook production team. I was an entertainment journo for three years, stepped up as a Deputy Editor in Grade 11 then subsequently Editor in Chief in matric. At that time, I was most probably doing it because I genuinely love producing content, editing, grammar, languages and exploring different parts of music and entertainment, I didn’t foresee any chances or rather any other possibilities of me pursuing a career and other several related careers within the field. The journey continued as I enrolled into varsity after passing my matric extremely well, studied Computer Technology for a year as it was my first degree option but a couple of months into it, I just had a conscious feeling that it was not the kind of career I’d want to do for the rest of my life. Yes, I was doing well in class and obtaining good grades but for some reason, the thought of being in that space didn’t resonate with me, my personality and better yet, my interests. Funny enough, while studying IT, I was part of a team doing production management for the Regina Mundi Catholic Church History Book for the jubilee celebration. I felt like all the signs were there in terms of what career path to follow but for some reason, I kind of snubbed them. I worked as a junior entertainment journalist then assistant editor for an online magazine the following year, enrolled for my second-degree option which was Audiovisual Communication, degree scooped while simultaneously working (in PR and music/ A&R now).
Brief advice to young people who’d likes to be in my position:
As a young person that’s growing up and continuously facing challenges, learn to prioritize and don’t be too proud to learn. Different things are evolving on a daily, have the patience and courage to learn something new everyday and in turn, be prepared to share the knowledge that you have with those coming after you… Treat the process like an ecosystem. Don’t put too much of your time into sulking about what couldn’t or didn’t work, take it as a blessing in disguise, put in more work and soldier on. As a young woman that’s in the process of growing her career as well, I believe that we have different set journeys as individuals, don’t compare your chapter 1 to someone else’s chapter 20, we all have different passions, dreams and purposes to fulfill… Do you!
