I matriculated in 2008 and with my parents not working I had to take a Gap year and work. With the thought of never being able to study, I applied to study through correspondence and that turned out to be the biggest disaster. After doing extensive research I came across Boston Media House. Having known all my life I always wanted to be in the media industry I got to chat to mum and asked her to just consider going with me to find out how I can apply and what my options would be in terms of full time or part time studies.
Having gone for my counselling session with an advisor I was asked to take the entrance exam of which I passed. With every dream of attending and wanting to do a radio Diploma at Boston Media House, I found myself in a situation of not knowing how the funds will be accessed.
By the Grace of God my dad had started a job that same month, mum and I then agreed I will leave work and she will assist me with the balance of the money I had saved for my 1st year.
Registered and finally starting my first year of campus the dream was to be a radio presenter. Having been told my whole life that my personality and presence fits the description of a media persona I was set on becoming one of the biggest radio hosts in SA.
rewriting my 1st year of Public Relations to end up getting an 85% average I refused to take the subject to my 2nd year. however attending the induction class I found myself falling in love with this world of new and endless possibilities.
3 years later I am a media studies graduate with a major in Strategic PR, a part time online radio presenter, I have been privileged to get my first break only a year after graduating with a company that did PR for Sony Mobile. Having worked on such an amazing brand I then moved to an agency where my portfolio consisted of Coca-Cola, Tsogo Sun and Heineken. I now work for a company called G&G Digital. G&G is a digital marketing and PR agency. I am so grateful to be in an industry that is constantly growing.
My advice to people who wish to follow the same career path would be to never give up. Its not easy to get a job in this field without experience I offered my services for free to gain the skills, experience and knowledge and finally someone noticed. Don’t be afraid to work. I worked out of my comfort zone for over a year. That thought me to never take for granted an opportunity given to me, give your best because if it’s what you really love it will never be hard nor will it be a Job.
